Description:
Tiny owl with rounded head, large for size of body. Has distinct buff spectacles on upper mantle which frame blackish patches (creating pattern of owl's face). Crown appears spotted rather than neatly and finely barred, and is barred rather than diffusely streaked on flanks, and has white eye-brows.
Distribution:
Scarce resident in lower valleys of southern parts of Diamer district, bordering Kohistan and Malakhand. Prefers montane and submontane forest oak, fir and pine; also in open forest edge, woodland and scrub, mostly from 1400-2800m elevation.
Behavior:
One of the most diurnal members of genus; active around dusk and at night, but also hunts during all hours of day. Hunts from perch, such as fence post; swoops to catch insects in flight. Takes a variety of small prey types, especially birds, but also insects, rodents and lizards. Relative to size of owl, fairly large birds taken, including adult and nestling barbets, woodpeckers and thrushes.
